Hundreds Line Up for Annual Holiday Food Giveaway

Hundreds of people lined up overnight in Little Havana to receive a ticket for a free holiday food basket.

CAMACOL, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, is distributing about 3,000 vouchers Wednesday morning to families in need. The line started Tuesday and was filling up quickly Wednesday morning.

"It helps, I have a son so if he's hungry and I don't have any food and they're actually giving me free food, you know what I'm saying, it's a blessing," said Tyrone James, who was in line Tuesday night.

It's the 29th year CAMACOL is handing out the baskets, which will be distributed on Dec. 17. They include a full Christmas dinner and are valued at up to $120.

"They give you pork, and they give you vegetables, rice, beans and all kinds of stuff," Myra Trasobares said.

For Yamile Lopez, it's the 20th year she's participated.

"I have four kids in the house, it's not easy for me and my husband, he just got laid off, I got laid off also, it's been hard for us," she said. "It means a lot, it really means a lot for us."
