Hundreds Line Up for Little Havana Food Distribution

The food was donated by Farm Share and distributed at Jose Marti Park.

Hundreds of people of all ages lined up Friday morning at Jose Marti Park in Little Havana for free food.

The fresh and healthy food was donated by Farm Share to alleviate the hunger problem in the area.

"I get about $100 in food stamps a month and it doesn't last nearly the whole month," said one resident named Jose Bieter.

Bieter said he has worked hard his whole life. He came to Miami when he was 9-years-old and went to Miami Senior High School. He has since had jobs in kitchens, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, at Home Depot and K-Mart and in construction.

Right now, Bieter has three part-time jobs and is planning on retiring in two years, but he can't right now because he is also taking care of his two cousins. He said he moved into a smaller apartment and cut down on all his expenses to be able to afford food.

When conditions are tight, he relies on food distributions like Friday's to fill in the gaps.

"It's going to help me for four or five meals and every little thing helps," he said. "We're grateful for it."

Friday's food drive was also hosted by Florida State Representative David Richardson, Miami-Dade Commissioner Bruno Barreiro and City of Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo.
