Hundreds of People Turn Out For Viewing For Kaely Camacho

The hit and run crash victim "had a really pretty smile," a fellow student says

Hundreds of people from Palmetto Bay turned out Tuesday evening for the viewing for Kaely Camacho, an eighth-grader at Southwood Middle School who was killed in a hit and run crash last Friday.

Deandre Leatherbury fondly remembers his friend Camacho, who he says always made him feel welcome as a newcomer to the middle school.

“On the way to lunch, I bumped into her and she smiled at me and started laughing, and I kept going, and after that I saw her every day,” Leatherbury said, crying.

He said Camacho, who was 13, “had a really pretty smile. Her braces were blue and they matched her eyes.”

The teen, who excelled in her studies and was a cheerleader, was killed early Friday morning as she and her older sister were being driven home by their father. Police said Sandor Guillen, 38, was drunk when he hit their Chrysler minivan with his Range Rover Sport at SW 184th Street and the Busway in southwest Miami-Dade.

He tried to flee on foot but was caught soon after, police said.

After being discharged from the hospital Tuesday, Guillen was arrested and taken to Miami-Dade County Jail, police said. He faces five charges, including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, police said.

Various fire departments, including those from Miami-Dade, Coral Gables, and Broward, came to pay their respects at Christ Church Fellowship Tuesday. Camacho's stepfather is a firefighter.

“Inside it was weird because we had bought flowers for her and we were going to go in to give it to her mom and her dad and her sister and her brother,” Leatherbury said. “There were so many people we couldn’t get in.”
