While Hurricane Irene is forecast to steer clear of South Florida, local officials are not taking anything for granted.

The Broward County School District announced Wednesday it was canceling all high school football games and extracurricular activities scheduled for Thursday. Schools will still be open but outdoor activities and field trips have been canceled, officials said

Miami-Dade Schools officials said schools will operate normally and there will be no cancellations.

The National Park Service announced the islands at Biscayne National Park have been closed indefinitely to the public as the powerful storm approaches.

The closure includes popular islands Boca Chita Key, Elliot Key and Adams Key. Mariners will be allowed to use waters in the area, but are being cautioned to stay tuned to weather reports.

South Florida is expected to be spared any serious damage from Irene, but strong winds and some rain is expected to lash the area as the hurricane passes.

Broward Schools said activities will return to normal Friday.
