Hurricane Katia continued to move steadily northwestward Tuesday as a Category 2 storm, according to forecasts.

The storm is expected to cause gusty winds and large waves in Bermuda, where a tropical storm watch is in effect.

As of 8 p.m., Katia had maximum sustained winds near 105 mph as it moved at 10 miles per hour about 335 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm had become a Category 4 storm late Monday and is expected to fluctuate in strength before it begins to weaken.

Katia is expected to veer to the northeast, and the U.S. is expected to avoid a direct hit, though NHC forecasters are warning of large swells and threatening surf and rip current conditions along the east coast.

Hurricane force winds were extended outward up to 80 miles from the center of the storm with tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 205 miles.
