Hurricane Ravaged House Finally Gets Fixed

Five years after Wilma, a family gets some new walls

It's been five years since Hurricane Wilma wreaked havoc on South Florida, and Carlos and Maria Castello have had to live with a constant reminder of the storm ever since.

Until now that is.

The couple's home, which had been sporting a partially mended roof and two destroyed bedroom walls since Wilma, finally received some much-needed renovations thanks to a non-profit that helps repair homes for low-income families.

While New Orleans has Brad Pitt, the Castellos have Commissioner Francis Suarez, who met the couple during a campaign tour last year and then reached out to Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade.

"It was one of the worst affected homes from the hurricane," Suarez said, "and it was one which I felt the family could not live in much longer."

On Saturday, volunteers from the University of Miami and Wells Fargo made like Extreme Home Makeover and restored the damaged home.

With an active hurricane season in effect, let's hope it stays that way.
