Miami Man Struck, Killed Trying to Cross I-95: FHP

The southbound lanes of the highway were shut down following the accident.

A 62-year-old Miami man was struck and killed by a SUV while attempting to cross the southbound lanes of I-95 to help a relative whose vehicle was disabled on the opposite shoulder Thursday  night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Anelus Arre was hit by a 2007 Ford Expedition driven by a 47-year-old Boynton Beach man at 7:03 p.m., the agency said.

Arre stopped and left his vehicle on the right shoulder, then crossed the southbound lanes of I-95, a quarter-mile south of Broward Boulevard. The driver took evasive action to avoid colliding with Arre, but struck him "with the right front and side of the vehicle," the highway patrol said.

There were seven people, including six passengers, inside the Ford Expedition when the accident occurred, the highway patrol said. The incident was not alcohol-related, it added.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down at about 7:30 p.m. after the accident, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said, but they are now again open to traffic.
