‘I Had to Fight for My Life': Suspect in Road Rage Stabbing

The driver accused of stabbing another man in an alleged road rage case is now free.

Peter Whyte, 42, posted bond from the Broward County Jail on Friday, and he told his side of the story of what led up to the roadside brawl.

"He threw me down. We was fighting. His girlfriend came down. She was in the passenger seat. She dragged me. He twisted my neck. Got my head between his legs, trying to get my head to slam on the ground. So I had to fight for my life," Whyte explained outside the jail.

Whyte said he was defending himself when Florida Highway Patrol troopers said he stabbed Nolan Goad, 22.

The incident, dubbed an act of road rage, happened earlier this week in Deerfield Beach. Investigators said it started near 10th Street and Dixie Highway, and escalated when the two pulled over on I-95.

"He got out of his car and he flung a Gatorade," Whyte said.

He said he was antagonized on the road before the fight, "When I jumped in the exit to go by the 95, he went ahead and cut me off."

It all came to a boiling point. Cellphone video was taken by someone who saw it happen. Whyte then left the scene.

"I saw two more guys beside the car looking at me. That's why I left the scene."

He said once he realized he shouldn't have left, it was too late, "I was scared to face the cops by myself."

Whyte turned himself in Thursday and stood before a judge on Friday, charged with aggravated battery and criminal mischief. His bond was set at $11,000.

Troopers said the victim, who was with his girlfriend, was treated at the hospital and released.

FHP said Whyte refuses to talk with investigators, and the victim did give a detailed account of what happened.
