Ichiro Inches Closer to 3,000 as Marlins Beat Cardinals

Ichiro Suzuki collected three hits in Miami's 6-3 win over St. Louis on Sunday

Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki had three hits in his team's 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Suzuki is now only six hits away from 3,000 in his career. The veteran doubled for the eighth time this season and also scored a run. Suzuki is now hitting .343 on the season and has been one of Miami's most dependable and consistent hitters all season long.

The win for the Marlins gave the team a series victory. Miami is back to seven games over .500 as it heads into a four-game series with the last place Philadelphia Phillies. Miami has often struggled this year in games against teams with losing records.

Giancarlo Stanton continued his superb July with a two-hit day. Stanton had two doubles to give him 14 on the season and lifted his average to .238. The slugger now has 52 runs batted in on the year as well.

Two-hit days were common for Miami in the win as Christian Yelich and Jeff Mathis also collected multiple knocks.

Adam Conley pitched well, but ended up with a no-decision. Conley struck out nine in his 5.1 innings while allowing three runs. Only two of the runs were earned, but it was enough to cause Conley to exit with the score tied at three.

The win went to Kyle Barraclough who gave the Marlins 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. That set things up for Fernando Rodney in the eighth inning and A.J. Ramos' 29th save in the ninth.

Jose Fernandez will get his first start of the second half when he opens the series against the Phillies on Monday.
