Infant Suffered Severe Brain Injuries While Under Care of Miami Man

A five-month-old baby is fighting for his life after he suffered severe brain injuries while he was being cared for by a man Miami Police arrested Wednesday.

Miami Police said Antwan Sawyer, 27, was caring for the infant when he suffered his injuries. According to police, the infant suffered severe brain injuries, a lung contusion, retinal hemorrhaging to both eyes, and bruising to his buttocks.

According to the police report, after being read his Miranda rights, Sawyer said the infant was injured when he fell from a bed. Doctors told police that the injuries to the infant were not consistent with a fall and called them β€œnon-accidental.”

Sawyer was taken to jail on a charge of aggravated child abuse with injuries. A bench warrant was also out for his arrest on a previous marijuana charge. Sawyer was given a bond of $12,000 on the charges.

The child's father, Adolfo Bravo, said he was still holding out hope for his son to recover.

"I have faith, you know. But medically speaking, from the many doctors I've spoken to, no matter how much faith I have, it's not going to happen," Bravo said.

The infant has been on life support at Miami Children's Hospital and is just days from turning six months old.

"I want justice and my son is going to die," Bravo said.

NBC 6 has been unable to reach the infant's mother, Sascha Garcia.
