International Student Gunned Down in Little Havana

A community is in mourning for an international student from India who was gunned down in Little Havana on Sunday.

Friends say 21-year-old Sai Kiran Aila hailed from India, and was pursuing his master's degree in information technology from Atlantis University.

According to police, someone shot Aila around 2 a.m. Sunday just north of Southwest Eighth Street, west of I-95. He was rushed to the hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Fellow students say they're shocked and fearful for their own safety.

"Friendly guy, gentle guy," said fellow student and friend Parbat Chauhan. "Pretty devastating news."

Atlantis University extended condolences through a statement on Monday, which read in part, "The death of a student affects the entire Atlantis University community, and all of us send our deepest expressions of sympathy to Sai Kiran’s parents, family and friends. Sai Kiran’s passing is made even more painful as the University embraces its Indian Student Community formed by great professionals who come to the United States to pursue a graduate degree."

Aila's family is working with the government in India to have his body brought back to them. They met with officials there on Monday.

Miami Police are investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
