Jacksonville Man Charged in Toddler Son's Death

Authorities say a Jacksonville man has been charged in his toddler son's death.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that rescuers responded to the family's home at Hollybrook Homes Apartments Wednesday morning and found Amari Raynard Barnhill unresponsive. The Florida Times-Union reports that the nearly-2-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say the boy had a severe cut on his head, bruising on the left side of his face and severe bruising on the front and back of his legs and his buttocks.

After interviewing 21-year-old Darien Head and his girlfriend, officers arrested Head and charged him with aggravated child abuse, child neglect, violation of probation or community control and petty theft. He was being held without bond. Jail records didn't list an attorney.
