Jan Jordan, BSO Captain Who Was Commander at Stoneman Douglas Shooting Scene, Resigns

The Broward Sheriff's Office captain who was the commander at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting scene is resigning, the department said Tuesday.

Capt. Jan Jordan informed Sheriff Scott Israel she would be resigning Tuesday for personal reasons, according to a BSO statement. Jordan has been with the department since January 2013.

Jordan was removed from her post overseeing the Parkland area after city officials expressed concern over how the sheriff's office reacted to the Feb. 14 shooting that killed 17 and wounded 17 others. Jordan was also criticized for her actions during the shooting at last week's Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission meetings.

Law enforcement officers told investigators Jordan appeared to be in a trance-like state and overwhelmed as she tried to direct the initial response to the attack.

Meanwhile, the first sergeant who responded to the shooting scene, Sgt. Brian Miller, has been placed on restrictive administrative duty pending an internal investigation, BSO officials said. Miller arrived at the school during the shooting but video shows he stayed outside the parking lot until long after the massacre ended, even as other law enforcement officers entered the building.
