The Miami Marlins took a series from the MLB-best Chicago Cubs with a 6-1 win on Sunday at Marlins Park.
Jose Fernandez made the start and had another strong effort which featured 13 strikeouts. The Cubs hold the best record of baseball and lost three out of four games to Miami. With the series win, the Marlins are six games over .500 for the first time this season.
Fernandez lasted seven innings and walked three along the way. Chicago only managed one run on four hits against Miami's ace. Fernandez now owns a 2.28 E.R.A to go along with a 10-3 record. The right-hander has even more robust numbers when pitching at home and is a potential starter for the National League All-Star team.
Miami once again had difficulty with runners in scoring position which prevented the team from expanding its lead until the eighth inning. The Marlins were only 1-13 with RISP and left eight runners on base when the eighth frame. It was there that Martin Prado came up with his 16th double of the year with the bases loaded. All three runners on base at the time would score.
The Marlins collected three other doubles with one each coming from Fernandez (1), Giancarlo Stanton (10) and Derek Dietrich (14). Dietrich also collected his 26th run batted in of the year in the win.
Miami will begin a road trip on Tuesday after taking Monday off. The first game will come against the Detroit Tigers with Adam Conley set to make the start.
