Jury Views Heated Text Messages in Facebook Killer Case

It was day two for the defense on Friday in the Facebook murder trial of Derek Medina. The jury read heated text messages exchanged by the couple and heard emotional testimony from the victim's mother and daughter.

On the day Jennifer Alfonso was murdered, her 10-year-old daughter said, "I hear a banging on the floor."

She said she heard banging on the floor and maybe gunshots but wasn't sure. The child was at home when Derek Medina, her stepfather, shot and killed Alfonso in their kitchen.

Medina claims he shot her in self-defense after Alfonso attacked him with a knife. Defense attorneys called back one of the crime scene detectives to reinforce this point.

"He had shot his wife with a 380. He also stated that they had arguments and she came at him with a knife," said Det. Rodgrick Everett, Jr. with South Miami Police.

But prosecutors pointed out that Medina did not have any defensive wounds.

Defense attorneys also played a Skype interview with one of Alfonso's friends and co-workers. They highlighted text messages between the two women, and wanted to show that Alfonso was the aggressor in the relationship, not Medina.

In one text, Alfonso said, "I need to calm down because I feel like I'm about to explode."

Medina is facing life in prison if convicted of first degree murder. His trial could wrap up by early next week.
