According to an analysis by The Boston Globe, firefighters are showing an alarming drop in response times to calls and barely over a third of calls nationwide are meeting national standards for response time. At some point, Steven Barron and Joshua Ryan probably thought about riding on a fire truck when they were kids, but probably not like this.
The two 17-year-old delinquents were caught damn near naked Monday stealing a Monroe County firetruck to escape a juvenile diversion program they were sentenced to attend. They were caught about 90 miles away in only their underwear by the Florida Highway Patrol.
"I can remember a couple of police cars stolen, but this is the first firetruck I know of,'' Monroe County Sheriff's spokesperson Becky Herrin told the Miami Herald.
Officials claim the teens slipped out of their tents at Camp Sawyer in the Florida Keys in the dead of night and found the Fire Department chief's keys to a firetruck. They hopped in the bright red truck and high-tailed it up the road before anyone noticed they or the truck was missing.
A camp counselor eventually called the Sheriff, who had also got a report that the fire chief's truck was missing. The cops put two-and-two together and it was only a matter of time before Barron and Ryan were tracked down.
The two boys are now charged with grand theft auto and probably won't have to worry about serving out any sentence at a camp this time.
