Key Biscayne Boat Accident Kills 1, Injures 2

The fatal crash happened just after 10 p.m. when a 68-foot motor yacht collided with a 27-foot pleasure craft.

Officials are investigating after a boating accident in Key Biscayne killed one person and injured two others Saturday night.

The fatal crash happened just after 10 p.m. when a 68-foot motor yacht collided with a 27-foot pleasure craft. The Coast Guard said three people from the smaller boat fell into the water and were pulled to safety by people aboard the yacht.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino, 29-year-old Maria del Valle died from injuries sustained in the crash. Two other people, 33-year-old Maykel Perdomo and 23-year-old Dayron Baralt, were taken to Mercy Hospital, and Baralt was transported to Jackson Memorial's Ryder Trauma Center. Baralt is listed in critical condition, while Perdomo is in serious condition.

Pino said FWC is working to determine if the operator of the yacht was impaired at the time of the crash.

"We're trying to figure out whether this man was intoxicated or not," Pino said. "There were signs of impairment originally."

Pino said 21 people were on the yacht at the time of the accident.

The smaller boat was towed to the Matheson Hammock Marina, while the larger boat will remained anchored at the scene of the crash. Pino said the yacht was being treated as a crime scene.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by FWC.
