Key Biscayne Teen Arrested in New Year's Day Crash that Killed College Student

A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a New Year's Day crash in Key Biscayne that killed an 18-year-old college student.

Miami-Dade Police say the teen was driving his 2008 silver Porsche as a high rate of speed when he lost control along Crandon Boulevard and Harbor Drive around 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Daniela Benavides, 18, was riding in the back, while Mathew Saldana, 17, was riding in the front passenger seat.

The teen lost control of the vehicle, striking several trees and the front gate of a residence.

Benavides was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a student at Pepperdine University in California.

The teen driver and Saldana were transported to the hospital with head injuries.

All three teens lived on Key Biscayne.

The teen was charged Tuesday with vehicular homicide. He was initially arrested as a juvenile and was released to await either trial or possible charges as an adult.

Jail records did not indicate whether he has hired an attorney. His next court hearing is scheduled for March.
