Lobster Mini-Season Begins Wednesday

2-day lobster harvest at Biscayne National Park

The two-day lobster mini-season for recreational fishermen will continue at Biscayne National Park this year, but that may change in the future.

Park officials have proposed eliminating the mini-season as part of a fishery management plan aimed at increasing the number and size of fish in park waters.

Other recommendations include phasing out commercial fishing in the park. State and federal officials still have to work out how to implement the plan, and the process will include opportunities for public comment.

In the meantime, rangers will patrol park waters to enforce legal lobster harvests during the two-day mini-season that starts Wednesday.

Licensed fishermen may take up to six lobsters per person per day in the park. The head and body section of each lobster must be greater than 3 inches.
