Local Great-Grandma Keeps It Moving

Miriam "Mim" Spaner won't slow down

Miriam Spaner starts her day with a 10-mile bike ride.

"I like the freedom of it and it's great exercise," she says.

Then, she spends maybe a few hours teaching exercise moves in the pool, and a couple laps on foot around the block.

"We do water aerobics three days a week, and I do line dancing twice a week," Spaner says.

Not bad, considering the great-grandma turns 90 next Tuesday.

"Unbelievable. She puts us all to shame," said one of her younger students, who calls her Mim. In their Margate neighborhood, Mim's known for more than just her physical feats.

"You don't know what a special lady this is," said Roslyn Harris, Mim's friend and pupil. Roslyn wrote a poem about Mim's kindness, and even keeps it in her purse.  "By helping others, you do thrive," she recited to her role model.

More than eight years ago, Roslyn spotted Mim on a bicycle. Roslyn told her she had one at home, but couldn't ride it.

"I said, 'nonsense!'" recalls Mim. "I got off the bike, I said, 'Get on, I'll teach you how.'"

When that didn't work, the elder Mim still didn't give up.

"She said to me, 'Why don't you come into the water, I teach water aerobics. Build up your muscles, then your legs will have strength and you'll be able to ride your bike,'" Roslyn remembers.

Roslyn, 83, is still working on building that strength with Mim on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Mim also roped Roslyn and others into exercises of the mind.

"I teach mahjong on Monday nights, and then on Tuesday nights we have a regular Mahjong game," said Mim.

Wednesday nights she plays 500 Rummy, and Sunday is poker night with the ladies.

"These are to keep the brain stimulated," said Mim who is widowed and lives alone. "And I read alot."

One complaint about getting older: now she has to read large print. She gave up driving six months ago because she no longer felt safe on the road. But she's giving up little else.

"Heaven forbid. Any activity that comes along, I'll be there," she said.
