Miami International Airport has unveiled a new sensory room aimed at helping kids with special needs have a comfortable travel experience.
The multi-purpose room, which opened during Autism Awareness Month, includes a variety of soothing “sensory fixtures” including wall puzzles, a light projector, an aquatic bubble tub and more. The room is dimly lit and includes cushioned seats and chairs, all to help create a relaxing atmosphere for kids with cognitive or developmental disabilities.
For kids with disabilities like autism, traveling can be a stressful and anxiety-producing activity, the airport says. The sensory room aims to provide a sense of calm to kids before they embark on their respective journeys.
The room is part of MIA’s MIAair program, which “provides tours and materials to families with special-needs children so that anyone – regardless of their disability – can experience the magic and wonder of flight.”
The room is open to young passengers from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is located just beyond Concourse D TSA Security Checkpoint #4 at MIA.
