Machito, a 32-year-old African elephant at Zoo Miami is gravely ill and not responding well to medications.

The zoo said Machito has undergone many tests and experts cannot find the exact cause of his condition. The zoo staff has consulted with experts throughout the world but tests have been inconclusive about what is causing his condition.

"Most results indicate that he is suffering from pneumonia and/or heart disease but none of the several treatments normally given for those issues has had positive results," the zoo said in a statement.

For several weeks, Machito has lost weight and has gotten weak, the zoo said.
