A man is facing an aggravated assault charge after police say he fired several shots outside his girlfriend's Little Havana restaurant early Monday morning.
Carlos Jesus Sanchez Bermudez, 37, was arrested after he got into an argument with his girlfriend at the Mexican restaurant she owns, Los Jarritos, in the area of Southwest 22nd Avenue and 1st Street, around 4:30 a.m., Miami Police said.
Bermudez made threats against his girlfriend and patrons before firing the shots outside the restaurant, police said. No one was injured.
"There's some sort of argument between the owner and this individual, possibly domestic related," Miami Police spokesman Det. Willie Moreno said. "And he made several threats not only to the owner but to other individuals in the area."
The girlfriend and Bermudez left the scene in a car but returned moments later, and Bermudez was taken into custody.
Bermudez spoke with NBC 6 South Florida from the back of a police cruiser, admitting he opened fire but only after two men who witnessed him arguing with his girlfriend pulled out a weapon.
"In the air, for defense, for defense," Bermudez said.
He said he works at the late-night establishment and carries a concealed weapons permit.
"I got weapon, but I got license, security guard, you know what I mean," he said.
