Man In Custody After Shots Fired, SWAT Standoff in Fort Lauderdale

A man who police say opened fire on officers was taken into custody after a SWAT standoff in Fort Lauderdale early Thursday.

The incident began shortly after midnight after the man, later identified as 39-year-old John Loden, shot at uniformed officers from his apartment in the 3000 block of Harbor Drive, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

Officers had gone to the home after a neighbor called 911 to report a commotion in the second-floor apartment.

After the officers knocked on the door and identified themselves, they heard a gunshot come from the residence, police said.

Loden barricaded himself inside the apartment as a SWAT team was called to the scene. SWAT officers heard more gunshots come from the apartment, police said.

He was later taken into custody and no one was injured in the incident. No one besides Loden was inside the apartment, police said.

It's unknown what charges he may face. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for a mental evaluation, officials said.
