Man Arrested in 1977 Murder of Coral Gables Nurse Granted Bond

A 75-year-old man arrested earlier this month in the 1977 murder of a Coral Gables nurse will be allowed to bond out of jail.

Allen Bregman walked handcuffed into court Friday morning with his attorney Barry Wax.

"A difficult ordeal, this is a gentleman who's never been arrested in his entire life," Wax said.

But back in 1977 Bregman was questioned by police about the death of Debra Clark. She was an ICU nurse at Coral Gables Hospital. He was her landlord and her boyfriend.

"The evidence might not be as intact as you might like it. So what I'll do is I'll be going back and beginning with all of the police reports from the investigation 39 years ago," Wax said.

Bregman has been in jail with no bond since his arrest three weeks ago. On Friday, his attorney was able to negotiate a bond of $100,000, but he'll be on house arrest, wearing a GPS ankle monitor if he bonds out.

"There's no one who's going to be able to come in and point the finger and say Allen Bregman committed this horrible crime," Wax said.

Bregman has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder in the case. But new forensic evidence might challenge a case that's remained unsolved for decades.

"We will be vigorously fighting the charges and bringing his innocence to light," Wax said.

Bregman's trial is scheduled to start on December 12th.
