Coral Springs Police arrested a man Monday in connection with a cold case sexual battery investigation into an incident that took place nearly a quarter century ago.

Officers arrested 55-year-old Ruben Chavez in Boca Raton and charged him with sexual battery on a helpless victim. Chavez was transported to the Broward County Jail, where he was being held until his first hearing.

According to a police statement, the victim went to a bar on January 7, 1996 with three other people. The following morning, she woke up in a Coral Springs hotel room without her underwear and told police officers she had been sexually assaulted.

Detectives were unable to connect DNA at the scene and on the victim at the time with anyone, however members of the department’s CSI and SVU teams re-evaluated evidence this past April and eventually connected the evidence to Chavez. US Marshals were able to take him into custody.

Chavez has numerous arrests for previous charges that include drug and weapons possession as well as trafficking of cocaine and Hydromorphone.
