Driver in fatal 2011 crash charged with leaving scene: Police

Nearly a year and a half after a bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit and run crash in Hollywood, police say they found and charged a suspect in the incident.

Albert Ciro Verdi, 49, turned himself in to authorities last month in the May 13, 2011 crash that killed 45-year-old Willmar Edwardo Galeano, Hollywood Police said Friday.

Galeano was riding his bicycle over the Sheridan Street Bridge at the Intracoastal Waterway when he was struck by a white Chevy passenger van, police said.

Cameras mounted on the bridge captured the incident and showed the van drive away from the scene. Galeano was seriously injured and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died two days later.

After police released the footage to media outlets, they received two CrimeStoppers tips which led them to Verdi and his van, police said. According to an arrest report the van had been recently repaired.

The report also said Verdi had been drinking at a nearby bar for about four hours before the crash.

Verdi turned himself in to police and appeared in court on Sept. 8 where he was formally charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death without rendering aid. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
