Man Caught on Camera Stealing Peacock in Coconut Grove

What to Know

  • Surveillance footage shows the man pulling up at the driveway of a home during the recent incident
  • He was seen sprinting down the street with a peacock in hand and an angry flock of birds following after him

Police are investigating after a man was caught on camera snatching a peacock from a Coconut Grove home.

Surveillance footage shows the man pulling up at the driveway of a home during the recent incident. The video shows the bird bandit slowly driving his red pickup down Nethia Drive before parking near Virginia Jasper's home.

"This man that I've never seen before came onto my property," Jasper said. "It worries me, because I don't think it was to get a pet, because of the way he grabbed them."

The man was seen trying to grab the peacocks on the driveway and on the front porch, but they managed to escape him and fly away. Moments later, he's seen sprinting down the street with a peacock in hand and an angry flock of birds following after him.

Jasper says she realized something bizarre happened when she stepped out of her house Sunday and found a bunch of feathers, along with some blood and flesh. Police said they're investigating the incident.

"We do want to talk to this individual and find out what his intentions were," Miami Police Commander Freddie Cruz said.

Although most Grove residents don't agree with the actions of the bird snatcher, many believe there's a big peacock problem and consider them a nuisance.

"Eighty percent of the neighborhood are not enamored by the peacocks. They make a lot of noise, especially in the mating season," resident Rick Ciravolo said.
