Man Charged in Bomb Threat at Kendall Gym

Guanchez was ordered held on $7,500 bond

A Miami man faced a judge Sunday after police say he walked into a West Kendall gym and told people he had a bomb in his car.

German Guanchez, 57, was arrested after the bizarre incident at an LA Fitness on Kendall Drive and Southwest 162nd Avenue.

Police say employees called 911 after Guanchez made the announcement, and the Miami-Dade bomb squad shut down Kendall Drive between 162nd Avenue and 167th Avenue, including several businesses, for about three hours.

Gym members watched as armed police showed up in full armor. After searching Guanchez's car, the bomb squad eventually determined the threat was a hoax.

Guanchez appeared in Miami-Dade bond court Sunday morning with bruises all over his face, charged with making a bomb threat.

Guanchez emphatically told Judge Bertila Soto he'd been tortured and asked her if she'd found his dog. Judge Soto asked Guanchez if he'd ever been treated for a mental issue, but he told her he had no mental issues.

Guanchez was ordered held on $7,500 bond.
