Man Charged in North Miami Beach Cop Shooting Expected to Leave Jail on Bond

The man accused of shooting a North Miami Beach police officer in February is expected to get out of jail on bond Wednesday.

Elton Bandoo did not appear in court Tuesday, where he was granted bond following a three-day hearing. Bandoo's attorney says his client will bond out Wednesday morning.

"I just had to prove the legitimacy of the funds that were being used for the bond," attorney Seth LaVey said.

Bandoo's aunt recently flew in from the Bahamas to help her nephew with the hefty $500,000 bond. She informed the court that her family owns a bank there, but prosecutors were initially concerned about the security of the bond.

Bandoo is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer. Veteran North Miami Beach officer Lino Diaz and a SWAT team were serving a search warrant at Bandoo's home in February for alleged identity theft and unemployment fraud.

Bandoo shot and injured Diaz, police said. Bandoo claims self-defense in the shooting, saying he thought he was being robbed.

Diaz underwent surgery for gunshot woulds to his arm and leg. He was later awarded the Medal of Heroism by Gov. Rick Scott for injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Bandoo's trial is set to begin sometime in August.
