Man Charged in Deadly Wrong Way Crash in Miami That Killed Medical School Student

A 23-year-old Miami man is behind bars after being charged in the deadly wrong way wreck that killed a student from South Florida and severely injuring her brother.

Franklin Chavez was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with three counts, including DUI manslaughter, for the December 13th accident on I-95 in Miami that killed 23-year-old Carmen Criales instantly.

She was driving to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and heading to New Jersey, where she was set to begin orientation for medical school.

Her brother, 22-year-old Bryan Criales, was seriously hurt in the crash and is still dealing with severe brain trauma. Their mother was also in the vehicle, but has recovered from her injuries.

In March, the Florida Highway Patrol said Chavez had a blood alcohol level of .046, which is below the legal limit. The case handed over to the State Attorney's Office, who decided to charge him after more evidence was presented.
