Man Critical After Being Shocked While Trimming Trees in Miami

A man was hospitalized in extremely critical condition after he was shocked while cutting down trees in Miami Tuesday.

The incident happened in the area of Southwest 17th Avenue and 18th Street, Miami Fire Rescue officials said.

Officials said the 24-year-old man was on a ladder trimming trees with his brother when he was shocked. The brother was able to get him off the ladder and administer CPR until paramedics arrived.

"He tried several attempts to try to shake him loose from the ladder, at the same time receiving some jolt from electricity, and when he was able to get him loose he fell to the ground and found his brother unconscious and not breathing," Miami Fire Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition.

It's believed the branches of the trees were hitting FPL wires, officials said.

Homeowner Carlos Garcia said he'd hired the man after a flyer was left at his house.

"And true to his word, he showed up this morning with his brother and they started working," Garcia said.

Before the brothers got far Garcia said he pointed out the branches tangled in power lines.

"He even told me, he goes 'listen, that one tree is touching the primary and secondary lines, we can't really do much to that tree' and I said 'no, that's fine, that's fine, cut back whatever you guys can cut back and don't worry about it,'" Garcia said. "I felt horrible, you know, he's a young guy."
