Man Dies After Altercation With Hollywood Police

An altercation between a man and a Hollywood Police officer Monday afternoon ended with the cop in the hospital and the other man dead.

Neighbors said they called Hollywood Police when they spotted the man outside their apartments in the 1800 block of Jackson Street without any clothes on. The man had just moved into the apartments around two weeks ago, but neighbors said he appeared to have a mental issue over the last 24 hours.

“He was just talking to himself and ranting,” a neighbor told NBC 6. “About nobody likes him and everybody’s mean and he’s not going to take it anymore."

Police said the man was behaving erratically and violently toward the officers and an altercation took place. Witnesses said an officer was bleeding and appeared to have been hit in the head. Police said at some point during the altercation, the suspect was hit with a Taser.

The man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead, police said. Alexander said there were no signs the man was shot with any type of gun.

Hollywood Police said the officer was also taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Police said they are treating the death as a death in custody and haven’t said if any weapons were recovered or how many officers were involved in the incident. They have not identified the man who died.
