Man Faces Child Abuse Charge for Sitting on Baby's Head: DeLand Police

Jonathan Savas told police he was trying to get his son to go to sleep, police said

A 24-year-old man sat on his baby’s head when he wouldn’t go to sleep, DeLand Police said.

An arrest report shows Jonathan Savas, 24, was charged with child abuse in the incident, which happened early Friday, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

Investigators said Savas, who is homeless, showed up at Irene Hossain's home at the Sha-De-Land mobile home park last Thursday with his 10-month-old child. When the baby wouldn't go to sleep at about 12:30 a.m., Deland Police said, Savas put him face down on the couch, sat on his head and held him down.

Hossain tried to intervene, but Savas told her “it’s my baby I can do whatever I want,” while his son kept screaming throughout the incident, the arrest report said.

But Savas stopped what he was doing and his son was unhurt, the newspaper reported.

Savas later told police that he was trying to get the baby to go to sleep, police said.

He is being held on $50,000 bail at the Volusia County branch jail, the newspaper reported. It wasn’t immediately known whether he has an attorney.
