Man Gets 10 Years in Prison in Fatal 2012 Crash at Jumbo's Restaurant in Liberty City

The driver who killed two people when he slammed his car into a popular Liberty City restaurant in 2012 will spending the next ten years behind bars.

Antonio Kenneth Lawrence was also sentenced to ten years of probation Friday after pleading guilty in the June 2012 crash at Jumbo's Restaurant.

Miami Police say 11 people were inside the restaurant when Lawrence's white Ford F-150 truck lost control and slammed into a pickup truck parked in Jumbo's parking lot. The second truck then slammed into the entrance of the eatery, killing two men.

One of the men was later identified by friends as 61-year-old Wilton Harris, pastor at St. Barnabas Wesleyan Methodist Church. The second victim was 63-year-old Aljo Hamlin, of Opa-Locka.

At Friday's sentencing hearing, Lawrence apologized to the victims' families.

"The last thing in the world I ever wanted was to hurt you to this magnitude," he said.

Lawrence had been charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter, one count of driving under the influence, and five counts of DUI with property damage.

He will get credit for time already served but his driver's license will be revoked for life.

If the case had gone to trial Lawrence was facing a maximum of 34 years in prison if found guilty.

"I'm glad it's over with so we can, my kids, we can go on with their lives and we're still hurting," said Edwina Howlitt, Hamlin's first wife.
