Man Gets Life Sentence for Killing, Beheading Girlfriend

A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend and cutting off her head.

A Broward County judge sentenced Paul Edwards on Wednesday. He was convicted last week of first-degree murder.

Lisa Spence disappeared in October 2009. Edwards told police he hadn't see her since she left him and moved out of their Miramar home. But prosecutors say Edwards stabbed Spence, cut off her head, loaded her body into a barrel and dumped it in a field in Miami Gardens.

Edwards then used Spence's cell phone to text the woman's family members. The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that police caught Edwards by cloning Spence's cell phone and sending him a message. They followed him to a friend's house, located near the field where the body was later found.
