A man is being held on $25,000 bond for killing a raccoon next to a Carl's Furniture store in Coconut Creek.
Joseph Amico, 26, is charged with causing a cruel death with pain and suffering to an animal, Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley said in court Thursday.
Amico was arrested after officials were alerted that a video had been posted on a Facebook page showing Amico swinging at the raccoon with a 2x4 piece wood, Hurley said. The video shows the raccoon standing up on its hind legs, as if reaching for food, just before Amico hits it, the judge said.
Amico allegedly told police he struck the raccoon because it looked helpless, according to Hurley. A voice in the background of the video could be heard saying, "Blast him, blast him," Hurley said.
Hurley raised Amico's bond from $2500 due to his past criminal history and the manner in which the raccoon was killed. Amico previously served three years in prison for burglary and trafficking opium.
He was ordered to wear a GPS monitor and stay away from Carl's Furniture if he posts bond.
