FDLA emphasized the incident was not a pursuit, but an attempted traffic stop to arrest the individuals

A man was shot by an Aventura police officer after authorities said they followed him for his involvement in a Dania Beach convenient store armed robbery.

The unidentified man was shot at 609 S. Ocean Drive in Hollywood Friday night just before 11 p.m. Bob Breeden of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said the subject sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was currently in stable condition at a hospital.

Video of the scene showed paramedics put a man on a stretcher into a Hollywood Fire Rescue truck. Several cars on the street were also involved in accidents.

Witness Craig Behmke told NBC 6 South Florida that he was on his way home when he saw about 30 police cars and a truck traveling the wrong way on a street.

“The guy that was in the truck was sitting there,” he said. “It looked like they gave him the breathalyzer and took his blood pressure, and they just took him away in the ambulance. It looked like he couldn’t even get up. They had to put him on a stretcher and take him away.”

Breeden said North Miami Beach, Aventura and FDLE were investigating a series of armed robberies when they followed two subjects to Hollywood. He emphasized the incident was not a pursuit, but an attempted traffic stop to arrest the individuals.

The convenience store, called 2 Quick Food Mart, is located at 348 SW 13th St.

Behmke said the police-involved shooting made him more aware of his surroundings.

“I heard about the robbery over here yesterday in Hallandale Beach, and then I figured there was something else going on,” he said. “Got to keep your eye out, you know.”

Hollywood Police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office were also on scene.
