Police are investigating after a man was found dead and another man was found covered in blood nearby inside a Fort Lauderdale apartment Sunday.

Fort Lauderdale Police said they received a 911 call around 2:25 a.m. of an unusual noise coming from a unit at the building at 623 Northeast 5th Avenue.

When officers entered the unit, they found two men covered in blood, police said. One man, 69-year-old Candido Paez, was lying on the floor while the other man, 30-year-old Alexander Lemas, was lying on a nearby bed, police said.

Paez was pronounced dead at the scene. Lemas had blood stains throughout his clothing, police said.

Lemas, a native of Guatemala, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for entering the United States undocumented.

Police haven't said how Paez died but said it's still an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
