Investigators said a man was killed when a car ran off the Florida's Turnpike in Pompano Beach and flipped into a ditch next to a landfill.
State troopers said an employee at Monarch Hill Landfill discovered the grisly scene at about 8:30 a.m. and called 911.
Florida Highway Patrol and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel combed the scene for hours before the driver was found dead about 20 feet from the crashed car. Authorities are withholding his name as the investigation continues.
Rescuers said they searched the ditch and did not find anyone else in or outside the car.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said the car was headed northbound on the Turnpike and somehow ran off the road, though he said he's not sure how long the car had been in the ditch before a Waste Management worker spotted it.
“We're still trying to determine of course what occurred. We know the vehicle was traveling northbound – that's why the investigators are out on the Turnpike looking at any marks that are on the roadway," Wysocky said. "Once we're able to talk to any friends or family, (that should) give us a better idea of what time the crash occurred."
