Arrest Made in Fatal Pompano Beach Shooting

The Broward Sheriff's Office homicide unit is investigating the shooting, which happened on the 200 block of NW 9th Street.

Authorities have arrested a gunman after a shooting in Pompano Beach killed one man Sunday morning.

The Broward Sheriff's Office homicide unit is investigating the shooting, which happened on the 200 block of NW 9th Street around 8:30 a.m.

BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said a 911 call described a man with a gun banging on the doors of a multi-family home. Witnesses told officers they heard gunshots. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a man in his 50s or 60s dead outside of a home.

"It might be that he was an innocent victim who was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time," Moschella said. "We don't know what happened prior to the shooting. Detectives still have a lot of unanswered questions."

About five hours after the shooting, detectives arrested 28-year-old Kerveney Arthelus in the shooting.

Authorities say a handgun was found in a vehicle belonging to Arthelus, who faces a first-degree murder charge. He was being held without bond and it was unknown whether he has an attorney.

Witnesses and tips from the public helped detectives identity Arthelus as the shooter, BSO officials said.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. Detectives are urging anyone with information to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
