Man Loses Hand in Fourth of July Fireworks Accident

A man lost his hand while setting off fireworks for the Fourth of July in Dania Beach Saturday night.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to the 100 block of NW 13th Avenue just before midnight after receiving a 911 call about a man bleeding profusely in the street. Officials said the 24-year-old from Margate lost most of his left hand above the wrist. He was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

Witnesses told firefighters that a firework went off in his hand. Responders noticed a large amount of debris in the roadway, saying it was consistent with the detonation of multiple fireworks.

Inspectors from the Broward Sheriff Fire Marshal's Bureau are investigating the incident along with the State Fire Marshal.
