Town of Golden Beach
Even when the Golden Beach police are not patrolling the town's waters, they get assistance from the Aventura police department.
Golden Beach, a tiny but rich island municipality in northeast Miami-Dade with a speed-trap happy police force, is not the ideal location to commit a burglary.
Especially if it's the mayor’s house.
But that is what Jose Ramon Lorenzo tried to do Friday night, according to police.
Lorenzo thought he was slick by sneaking on the island on a boat a little after 11 p.m.
And he might have even known the mayor was out of town.
But the mayor’s neighbors probably also knew he was out of town, so they became suspicious when they saw a man dressed in black attempting to break into his home.
They called police and within minutes, Officer Lyndean Peters pulled up with her dog, Bento.
Lorenzo stripped down to his boxers and jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway.
But then he was caught by an Aventura marine patrol officer on a boat, said Golden Beach Police Omar Paez.
Now Lorenzo, 47, of Lauderhill, is facing burglary charges.
“This is definitely not a common occurrence,” assured Paez, who added that it is not clear whether Lorenzo knew he was targetting the mayor's home.
Mayor Glenn Singer was in Colorado during the attempted break-in.
With less than 1,000 residents, Golden Beach has one of the highest per capita incomes in the country at $136,686 per household.
Bill Gates and Ricky Martin maintain homes there and the late Paul Newman also maintained a home in Golden Beach.
