Man Wanted for Attempted Murder Arrested During MLK Ride Out: Miami-Dade Police

A man wanted for attempted murder was one of dozens arrested during Monday's MLK Ride Out involving hundreds of dirt-bikes, all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles driving in and out of traffic, Miami-Dade Police officials said.

Surmondre Antonio McGregor, 19, was arrested for an attempted murder case that took place in the City of Miami, police said. He was being held without bond Tuesday and it was unknown if he's hired an attorney.

A second man, 27-year-old Corey Jones, was arrested for grand theft auto, police said. A total of 28 arrests were made, including five firearms-related arrests, police said.

The arrests were part of a Miami-Dade Police traffic safety operation to crack down on the riders, who hit the streets on Martin Luther King Day for the second year in a row.

"Under the guise of celebrating the MLK holiday, these groups took to our streets on off-road vehicles causing traffic hazards that endangered themselves and the public," police said in a statement.

Police said a total of 59 motorcycles and ATVs were towed during Monday's operation, along with three cars.

At the towing company where the bikes and ATVs that were confiscated were being held, those who had the right paperwork to show they are the true owners came to pick up their possessions Tuesday.

Rider James Stuart told NBC 6 that police should focus more on stopping dangerous criminals, not the riders who he says are just out for fun.

"At the end of the day they need to do the right thing, try to stop the killing, and you know change the community," Stuart said. "Dirt bikes aren't doing anything to the community."

"It's something that can not be tolerated, we don't intend to tolerate," Miami-Dade Police's Juan Perez said. "We are going to do everything we can to prevent this from happening next year."

Community leaders and police departments all over the region are trying to figure out how to handle the event.

"We will continue to collaborate with our community as well as our law enforcement partners in preparation for future events in an effort to address these dangerous activities," the police statement said.
