Marlins Acquire Cashner and Rea

The Marlins have acquired Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres

The Miami Marlins have acquired Andrew Cashner, Colin Rea and Tayron Guerrero from the San Diego Padres.

Going back to San Diego will be Josh Naylor, Carter Capps, Luis Castillo and Jarred Cosart. Capps is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, but was a dependable reliever last season. Naylor and Castillo were two of Miami's top prospects. Cosart had been a member of the big league starting rotation and spent part of the year in AAA as well.

Guerrero has been playing in AA and is known as a hard-throwing reliever. It remains to be seen where the Marlins will assign the 25-year old.

Cashner has had success in the past, but is in the middle of a poor season. The flamethrower has a 4.76 E.R.A this year despite pitching in the vast confines of Petco Park. Cashner has played most of his career with the Padres and was considered the ace of the staff for much of his time there.

For the Marlins, this represents a potentially big change in their rotation. In all likelihood, Cashner will slide into Cosart's rotation slot. While Cosart pitched well his last time out, he's had a tough season and has been inconsistent in his career. Miami was looking for a veteran starter with a good track record and Cashner represents that.

Rea is only in his second big-league season and has not pitched well. In 18 starts, Rea has a 4.98 E.R.A and a WHIP of 1.460. At 26, Rea still has time and the potential to improve however. The Marlins are likely banking on the fact that a change of scenery will be enough.

The Marlins may not be done dealing as they still have other obvious needs on the roster. Miami could seek bullpen and bench help as well as possibly another starter. The Marlins currently hold a Wild-Card spot and is also in contention for the division title.
