Marlins' Chen Strikes Out Six in Loss to Astros

Wei-Yin Chen struck out six Astros in Miami's 2-1 loss to Houston on Tuesday in Jupiter

The Miami Marlins fell to the Houston Astros by a final score of 2-1 on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

Wei-Yin Chen had a strong outing in the loss, but still ended up on the losing end. Chen struck out six Houston hitters across five innings of work, and walked none. One area Chen continued to struggle in, was the home run department. The lefty served up two homers in this one, and the long-ball is a problem he has dealt with throughout his career.

Miami used important pieces of the expected Opening Day bullpen after Chen exited. First up, was Brad Ziegler who turned in a perfect inning of work. Ziegler was followed by A.J. Ramos and he too worked a scoreless inning. Ramos has struggled this spring, but looked better in this one. Kyle Barraclough also added a perfect inning, with a strikeout.

Miami's bats were kept quiet in the loss, at least in terms of extra-base hits and runs. The Marlins did scatter seven hits, but only two of them went for extra bases. Ichiro Suzuki doubled and Ryan Jackson tripled, but the team left eight men on base. The Marlins were one for four with runners in scoring position during the loss.

The lone run for the Marlins was brought home by Giovanny Alfonzo, who is not officially a member of big-league camp. Alfonzo was borrowed from the minor league side for this game.

The Marlins will make another trip to Port St. Lucie on Wednesday to take on the New York Mets.
