Marlins Fight Back From Three Run Deficit to Beat Braves

The Marlins came from behind to beat the Braves 7-5 in Atlanta on Wednesday

The Miami Marlins erased another deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-5 on Wednesday at Turner Field.

Jose Fernandez was not at his best early on, but settled in as the game went on. Fernandez allowed four runs in the second inning and then nothing more. The right-hander was also part of a heated moment in the seventh inning. Both benches cleared when a pitch sailed by Fernandez's head.

In the inning prior to the brawl, Fernandez had hit Nick Markakis with a pitch. No words were exchanged at that moment, but Braves pitcher Jose Ramirez may have been sending a message with his pitch to Fernandez. The ace yelled out to Ramirez who was quickly ejected after the pitch. No punches were thrown and the game resumed relatively quickly.

Fernandez finished with seven innings of work in which he allowed the aforementioned four runs on six hits. Fernandez also walked a pair while striking out three.

This was a big win for Miami in terms of its playoff hopes. The Marlins were able to gain ground on every team ahead of them in the Wild-Card standings. Miami now trails by only four games with a little over two weeks left to play.

The big hit for Miami came during a four-run sixth inning with the team trailing by three runs. Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run home run to put Miami on top. That eventual game-winning homer was Ozuna's 23rd of the season.

Dee Gordon had a busy day with his fifth triple of the season. Gordon also stole three bases and scored two runs. J.T. Realmuto doubled for the 29th time this season for Miami's only other extra-base hit.

The Marlins will be off on Thursday before starting a series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. The ball will be given to Tom Koehler for the first game of the series.
