Marlins' Gordon Wins Silver Slugger Award

Dee Gordon's busy week continued when he won the Silver Slugger Award on Thursday

Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon added another trophy to his collection when he won the Silver Slugger Award on Thursday.

The Silver Slugger Award is given to the best offensive player at each position in his respective league. Gordon also picked up the Gold Glove and Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards for his work at second base earlier this week.

"Major League Baseball has an incredible wealth of young talent right now," said Louisville Slugger Director of Professional Baseball James Sass in an official release. "It's remarkable when you put some of these players' achievements in perspective. They are exciting to watch, and their performances are in line with many players who’ve made the Hall of Fame."

The Hall of Fame reference from Mr. Sass is of utmost importance when it comes to Gordon. By leading the National League in batting average and stolen bases, Gordon joined elite company in Jackie Robinson. The Hall of Famer led the NL in 1949 in both categories as well.

Gordon had a .333 batting average go go along with 58 stolen bases. The electrifying second baseman also led the league in hits and provided stellar defense all season long.

Miami had another Silver Slugger Award winner just a year ago when Giancarlo Stanton took home the hardware. Stanton would have had an opportunity to repeat that feat, but saw his season cut short by a broken hand. At the time, Stanton was pacing Major League Baseball in multiple offensive categories.

The Marlins are rumored to be considering a long-term deal for Gordon. Locking up the 2B would go a long way to building a perennial contender in Miami.
