Marlins Park officially became the most sustainable new ballpark in the United States for its small environmental impact, the Miami Marlins announced Friday.
The park and the surrounding garages, which were awarded with a plaque Friday, received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold Certification and became the first retractable-roof building in the world to receive the environmental honor.
The newly constructed ballpark received 40 points, just beating outdoor Target Field, where the Minnesota Twins play.
The ballpark surpassed its goal of a LEED Silver Certification.
The ratings system was designed by the U.S. Green Building Council to distinguish buildings that have less on an environmental impact.
Innovative design, construction and operations measures were several factors in the rating.
