Marlins' Stanton Likely to Miss Rest of Season

The Marlins likely lost Giancarlo Stanton for the remainder of the season with a serious groin injury

The Miami Marlins have likely lost Giancarlo Stanton for the rest of the season due to a groin injury.

Team president Michael Hill stated that the injury is a Grade 3 groin strain and will take at least six weeks to properly heal from. Manager Don Mattingly indicated that Stanton is done for the season during his postgame comments. With a six week timetable, Stanton could possibly be an option for the playoffs if Miami qualifies.

In addition to losing Stanton, the team also placed Adam Conley on the disabled list prior to Sunday's game. The moves represent two tremendous losses for a team that is trying to stay in playoff contention. Stanton injured his groin trying to stretch a single into a double on Saturday evening. Conley admitted to pitching with a sore hand following the team's loss on Saturday.

Both were placed on the 15-day disabled list, but it remains to be seen if Conley will be ready to go in about two weeks when eligible. Conley's injury is tendonitis of his left third finger. Stanton was initially listed with a groin strain, before an MRI revealed the more serious condition.

Taking Stanton and Conley's place on the roster are Robert Andino and Hunter Cervenka. Andino is a versatile player that previously played for the Marlins. Cervenka will give Miami an extra arm in the bullpen until a starter is needed.

With Stanton out of action, it is likely that the Marlins will turn to Ichiro Suzuki as their new everyday right-fielder. Suzuki has enjoyed a fine season, but had trouble last year when he began to play more often. Miami lacks another pure outfielder on its bench. Derek Dietrich can slide into the outfield if needed and Miami could look into the free agent market now as well.
